SALEM SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

SALEM SCHOOL DISTRICT

May 17, 2004

The Board of Education of the Salem School District #30, state of Arkansas, met in regular session on Monday, May 17, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in the boardroom on the high school campus.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Yarnell.

ROLL CALL:

Present:  Yarnell, Innis, Smith, and Falco

Absent:   Welch

The Chairman declared a quorum present and opened the meeting for business.

The minutes were reviewed for the April 19, 2004, regular meeting.  Innis made the motion, second by Falco, to approve the minutes as written.  Passed.

Superintendent Bob Foster presented a proposed calendar for the 2004/2005 school year to board members (attached).  Smith made the motion, second by Falco to adopt the 2004/2005 school calendar as recommended.  Passed.

Two student transfers from the Izard County Consolidated School District were discussed.  Innis made the motion, second by Smith to accept both transfers as recommended (attached).  Passed.

Smith made the motion, second by Innis to go into executive session.  Passed.

The Chairman declared the motion carried at 6:10 p.m.

The board returned to open session at 6:30 p.m.

Superintendent Foster read a letter of retirement from sixth grade teacher Brenda Casey effective at the end of the 2003/2004  school year.  Smith made the motion, second by Falco to accept Brenda Casey’s resignation.  Passed.

Foster recommended to extend a contract to David Cone for the 2004/2005 school year to fill the position vacated by Brenda Casey.  Smith made the motion, second by Innis to employ David Cone for the 2004/2005 school year as recommended.  Passed.

Superintendent Foster recommended to hire Marie Neighhbors as teacher’s aide for the 2004/2005 school year.  Innis made the motion, second by Smith to extend a contract to Marie Neighbors as recommended.  Passed.

High School Principal Ken Rich commended the high school girl’s softball team on their outstanding year winning district, conference, and being runner-up in their region.  He also noted state track meet winners from the senior boys and junior girls divisions.

The Superintendent recognized the 5th and 9th grade classes for their outstanding performance on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

The financial reports were reviewed.

Smith made the motion, second by Innis to adjourn.  Passed.

The Chairman declared the meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
