SALEM SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

SALEM SCHOOL DISTRICT

November 17, 2003

 

The Board of Education of the Salem School District #30, state of Arkansas, met in regular session on Monday, November 17, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in the boardroom on the high school campus.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Yarnell.

 

ROLL CALL:

Present:  Yarnell, Innis, Smith, Falco, Welch

Absent:   None

The Chairman declared a quorum present and opened the meeting for business.

The minutes were reviewed for the October 20, 2003, regular meeting.  Innis made the motion, second by Smith, to approve the minutes as written.  The Chairman declared the motion carried.

A plaque for recognition of 15 years of dedicated service was presented to Dr. Alan Winberry in appreciation for his tenure on the Salem School Board of Education.

A discussion of Adequate Yearly Progress, a part of the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, as relating to Benchmark exam scores and that relation to school improvement for Salem Schools now and in the future was discussed.

Superintendent Foster updated the board on various school reform efforts being debated.

Next, Foster presented board members with a report on the condition of the schoolís bus fleet noting that only two buses had high mileage and that new buses were being purchased on a fairly regular basis to keep the fleet well maintained.

The financial reports were reviewed.

Superintendent Foster noted that four veterans from the area were presented with high school diplomas at recent Veteranís Day ceremonies held. 

High School Principal Ken Rich recognized the recent accomplishments of several student athletes.  Lance Powell, a ninth grader was named All-State in Cross Country placing 10th in A-AA competition.  Cross Country team members Brittany Hale, Tabitha Hall, Bailey Wagner, Tori Watkins, and Megan Cox placed 8th in class A-AA state Cross Country meet.  Ashley Smith, a senior was named All-State in girlís golf.

The superintendent and other board members welcomed Mike Falco to his appointment to the school board.

Smith made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Innis.

The Chairman declared the meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
