Welcome to 5th Grade!
Conference time: 1:20 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Just for your information:
Spelling tests are on Fridays.
There will be a math test after every 5th lesson after lesson 10.
Here are a few important websites:
Renaissance Place (A place to check your child’s A.R. points, grades, and goals.)
Edline (Check your child’s grades here!)
Lunch Balance (Check your child’s lunch balance here!)
State Frameworks (This will connect you to the Department of Education Website. On this page, you will find the curriculum frameworks – what your child needs to know in each subject for fifth grade.)
Do you need some extra help for your child?
(Here are a few GREAT websites that have extra practice for your child.)
Study Island (Your child has a password for this site. This site is great practice for the Benchmark Test.)
Strategies to help your child in Reading:
*Let your child read 2 pages in his or her book and then ask him or her to tell the main idea (what the story is mostly about).
*Let your child read 2 pages in his or her book and then have your child describe the images that came to mind while reading (the pictures they imagined).
*MOST IMPORTANTLY, make sure your child reads every day. It does not have to be boring reading. Any reading is better than none. Practice is the only way to get better at something!
Frameworks to study this month with your child:
*Practice the multiplication facts.
*Quiz your child on estimating the correct measurement of everyday items.
Example: How much does an apple weigh? How many feet tall is an average door? What kinds of things would you measure using inches, feet, or miles.
*Practice elapsed time problems
Example: If I need to be at work at 8:00 a.m. and it takes me 45 minutes to get to work, what time will I need to leave my house?
*Practice with your child identifying different parts of speech in their reading books.
Example: Point out three nouns in this sentence. Which word is the verb. Point out three adjectives in this sentence.
*Practice writing and identifying different types of sentences.
*Practice your vocabulary for science. (Ask your child what these words mean.)
Here are the key terms for this month:
